Diophantic equations are equations where all coefficients and unknowns must be integer numbers. They play an important role in modern number theory and algebraic geometry. Dahmen and his colleagues developed new methods with which a big number of important diophantic equations could possibly be solved in the future. The most famous diophantic equation are Fermat's equations, named after the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat. Following Dahmen his research is a typical example of research driven by pure interest.
